Weird of Mouth
Denmark, USA
Mette Rasmussen – saxophone, preparations, bells
Craig Taborn – piano, preparations
Ches Smith – drums, percussion
While their bandname may have been a simple misunderstanding, the music of this trio is based on the very opposite: complex, complete, comradely understanding. Now in their ninth year, this Free Jazz supergroup around Danish-born, Norway-based saxophonist Mette Rasmussen with her American colleagues Craig Taborn, piano, and Ches Smith, drums, gets „together to expeditiously compose and perform music—two processes which often occur in such rapid succession that it seems like the three are simply improvising“, as the album notes to their self-titled debut explain. Words like „fierce“ or „fiery“, „powerful“ and „cathartic“, but also „mysterious“ and „lyrical“ come up in reviews to describe „Weird of Mouth“s vast musical range.
