We are delighted to announce that the Dutch formation Brainteaser Orchestra will be performing in Saalfelden this year. Under the direction of composer Tijn Wybenga, 13 impressive jazz musicians (including Alistair Payne (tr), Kika Sprangers (a-sax), George Dumitriu (viola) and Jamie Peet (dr)) have come together in this mixture of orchestra and big band to break down the genre boundaries of jazz with their very own sound. Crashing grooves, rousing ballads, wild solos and spacy soundscapes have become musically synonymous with their generation.
Mastermind, composer and drummer Oli Steidle presents his band The Killing Popes and once again explores which musical styles can be interwoven. Here, free jazz meets jazz rock, extreme forms of heavy metal, drum ‘n’ bass meets dubstep and contemporary electronic music is brought together in a highly complex sound eruption, paired with catchy melodies and room for improvisation.
It's fair to say that no other artist has done more to put the cello at the centre of contemporary jazz than MacArthur Fellow Tomeka Reid. Together with Jason Roebke on bass, Mary Halvorson on guitar and Tomas Fujiwara on percussion, Reid also shows herself to be an accomplished composer with a bold and idiosyncratic approach to improvisation settings. Building on the deeply intuitive language the quartet has developed in recent years, they engage in a musical conversation together, intense and always calibrated. In Saalfelden they will present their latest CD ‘3+3’, which was released last month.
